Innova琀椀ng Teacher Recruitment and Development Through the KCKPS Teaching
Fellows Program
In recent years, alterna琀椀ve cer琀椀昀椀ca琀椀on programs (ACPs) have revolu琀椀onized teacher recruitment, drawing
professionals from diverse backgrounds into educa琀椀on. The Kansas City, Kansas Public School district’s
Teaching Fellows ACP exempli昀椀es this approach, emphasizing diversity and exper琀椀se.
Bridging Diversity and Exper琀椀se
Between 2022 and 2024, the district recruited 51 teachers through the KCK Teaching Fellows Secondary
Educa琀椀on and Teacher Appren琀椀ce Elementary Educa琀椀on ACPs. These teachers brought diverse
professional backgrounds, with par琀椀cipants being 41% White, 27% African American, 21% Hispanic, 3%
Asian, 1% American Indian/Alaskan Na琀椀ve, and 8% Unknown. This e昀昀ort re昀氀ects the district’s commitment
to diversity and the poten琀椀al of ACPs to enhance the teaching profession.
Enhancing Teacher Prepara琀椀on and Support
The program includes an eight-week Summer Ins琀椀tute “boot camp” led by experienced educators,
providing founda琀椀onal skills and knowledge. A comprehensive handbook ensures consistent and highquality teacher development.
Comprehensive Field Experience
Fellows undergo 昀椀eld experience through a one-school model focusing on con琀椀nuity and studentcentered coaching. A teaching lab o昀昀ers a simulated classroom for prac琀椀cal learning, supported by the
Gradual Release of Responsibility instruc琀椀onal model.
Con琀椀nuous Improvement and Professional Development
An instruc琀椀onal coach and university supervisor conducted 156 classroom observa琀椀ons in 2023, providing
evalua琀椀ve feedback. Monthly professional development sessions and a weekly newsle琀琀er o昀昀er addi琀椀onal
support and resource sharing.
